IS YOUR VEHICLE READY FOR ITS NYS INSPECTION?

If you are a vehicle owner in the Jamestown and Ripley area, it's important to know what to expect from the NYS inspection so you can make sure that your vehicle is ready. You know to check for things like severely worn brakes or tire treads, but there are other things to check that you might not have considered. We have compiled some tips to pass your next inspection so you don't need to worry about any additional hassle.

  • Wiper Blades: Your windshield wipers allow you to see out your windshield when it's raining; they must be operational and not torn or missing.
  • Headlights & Taillights: Your lights cannot be cracked, even if they still work. This also means that you cannot repair them with tape; the glass must be in perfect condition.
  • Mirrors: Your rear view and side mirrors must be present and unbroken to pass inspection. If you have cracked or shattered mirrors, you will not pass; being able to see behind you at all times is necessary to safely operate your vehicle.
  • Windshield: No cracks of 11 inches or more in the area covered by wiper blades are allowed.
  • Window Tints: New York State has strict window tint requirements. On sedans, all windows must have a light transparency of at least 70%. On SUVs, the driver's and passenger's front windows have the same requirements, but rear windows are allowed to have the factory dark tint.
  • Horn: Your vehicle's horn needs to work properly in order to pass NYS inspection.
  • Seatbelts: Your vehicle's seatbelts must all be in good working order.
  • Emissions: During your NYS inspections, all of your vehicle's diagnostics and monitors will be checked. If you have any indicator lights on, address the problem before you bring your vehicle in for its inspection.

If you habitually maintain your vehicle and replace broken parts, you should be in good shape for your NYS inspection. Feel free to reach out to Jack's Repair Shop if you have any questions about what to expect.
